Northern Lights Children's Choir, Director: Russell Packard

Our childrenšs choir has been a feature at White Bear UU church for a number of years. Practice takes place between services nearly every Sunday, so children from either service can participate. When the choir performs they are placed at the end of the first service and the beginning of the second, so they need not sit through the entire service twice.

In addition to learning and singing various songs, our childrenšs choir spends time learning to use drums and other rhythm instruments. Over the years we have purchased several congas and tom tom drums and this provides another rich dimension to what the children can learn and do. A number of our older children have learned to play the tin whistle as well.

Choir membership is open to grades 1- 8, and we occasionally have a group of youth who enjoy a drumming session with Russell. Overall, we feel this offers a rich musical experience for children here.

2008 - 2009 Schedule

The childrenšs choir will practice nearly every Sunday this year. During the course of the year they will have three major performances, one in November, one in March and one in May. Choir parents will be notified of performance dates as those are set.

Having the choir practice on a regular basis, will make the schedule easier to understand for all our parents, and keep the children in the habit of weekly practice. Russell hopes to schedule additional performances with the adult choir when possible.

Sundays when there will be no choir practice will include the following:

  • October 19
  • November 30
  • All December Sundays
  • January 4
  • January 11
  • May 3

Childrenšs choir will end this year on RE Sunday. This is a Sunday when we celebrate passages in our childrenšs lives and thank our volunteer teachers. This is typically the final performance for our childrenšs choir.
