Liberty, morality,
and human dignity
consist precisely in this,
that one does good
not because it is commanded,
but because one conceives it,
wills it,
and loves it.
                     -- Mikhail Bakunin
The society I live in is mine, open to my voice and action,
or I do not live there at all. -- Paul Goodman

The social action committee is focusing on several projects. We encourage you to consider giving assistance in one of these projects:

Walker West Music Academy
This non-profit St. Paulschool, with about 325 mostly inner city students, was founded in 1989 by two African-American musicians. Teaching and celebrating a wide range of music, it survives on donations and needs money for scholarships and instruments. 53% of operating costs are now covered by tuition. WW offers hope for many talented kids who have few or no similar opportunities. The directors are very interested in developing a partnership with us. We help with fundraising efforts, grounds maintenance, and connections.

Affordable Housing
Habitat for Humanity (HH)
We help with fundraising and participate in building homes.
UU Affordable Housing Partnership UUAHP, a group of seven local congregations, provides volunteers and money to Habitat for Humanity for a ten-day build in the summer.

East Metro Women’s Council
East Metro Women’s Council provides subsidized shelter and other aid for displaced homemakers who are learning job skills. Opportunities include: tutoring, mentoring, child care, gardening; creating art work or giving art classes or music lessons; donating good used furniture and other household items to EMWC residents and those leaving to start a new life.
Carol Bryan is East Metro’s volunteer coordinator and a member of our congregation.

Peace and Justice
You can help maintain awareness of issues within the congregation and to mobilize members who are ready to take a public stand.  There is a protest vigil downtown White Bear Lake at 4th and Hwy 61 every Monday, 4-5 p.m., and ongoing Peace and Justice activities through the church.

FAMILY SHELTER HELP
On the third Sunday of each month WBUUC folks volunteer to make pizza and paint faces of the clients (or be face-painted by the kids!) Volunteers work from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

Fair Trade Coffee Sales
We make a commitment to you and the poorest peoples of the world's coffee growing nations. Coffee is the second largest legally traded commodity after oil. Fair Trade is the internationally recognized certification guaranteeing a living wage for the cooperative workers on coffee plantations. All coffee for sales is certified organic, allowing critical plant and animal habitat to remain pure and intact. Proceeds from coffee sales benefit the communities of Nueva Luz Cooperative around Chiapas, Mexico. Our Coffee cart can be found in the social hall. Available are light, dark, and decaffeinated coffee beans and ground form. Each pound sells for $10. On dollar of profit goes to WBUUC and $3.50 of regular and $2.30 of decaf goes to the growing cooperatives. Responsible Consumerism Is A Moral Imparative.

Come into this place which we make holy by our presence.  Come in with all of your vulnerabilities and strengths, fears and anxieties, loves and hopes.  For here you need not hide, not pretend, nor be anything other than who you are and who you are called to be.

Come into this place where we can touch and be touched, heal and be healed, forgive and be forgiven. Come into this place where the ordinary is sanctified, the human is celebrated, the compassionate is expected.Come into this place, together we make it a holy place.
