Music is a vital part of the life at White Bear Unitarian Universalist
Church and there are many opportunities to participate. Vocalists and instrumentalists
have options for both group and individual contributions. We present a wide
variety of music of different cultures, eras and styles.
WBUUC Adult Choir is open to all
adult singers. No auditions are required, though some experience in part
singing and reading music is helpful. The
choir sings at the 9:00 and 11:00 services twice a month. Rehearsals are
Wednesdays 6:00 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. For more information, contact Thaxter Cunio
WBUUC Big Band is comprised of instrumentalists at WBUUC and special
guests. They provide great jazz standards and dance music for two
Big Band nights
per year along with music for special occasions. For more information,
contact Louis Hauser.
WBUUC Youth Jazz Band brings together WBUUC youth and friends for the pleasure
of making music with the assist of a qualified director. Participating
youth musicians need two years' experience on their jazz instrument (sax,
trombone,
trumpet, piano, keyboard, guitar, bass, traps). The season is roughly May
and June. For more information contact the church office.
Northern Lights Children's Choir is open to children grades one through
eight. The children's choir holds rehearsals on Sunday mornings between
September
and June and performs approximately two to three times per year at the
Sunday Services. The Children's Choir is a part of Youth Education at
WBUUC and
is directed by Russell Packard.
Esperanza is an a cappella choir which sings international songs of
freedom and hope. Esperanza meets the 2nd and 4th Thursday evenings
from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. For more information, contact the church office.
Wildwood Folksingers is a group dedicated to the folk song genre. Instruments
are often used to play and sing joyously together with no performance
pressure! For more information, contact the church office.
Featured Musicians
Offers instrumentalists and singers an opportunity to provide music
for non-choir Sundays. For more information, contact Thaxter Cunio.
Composer Commissioning Program
The world of sacred music is quite vast, with a long history of choral
compositions set to biblical and liturgical texts. In contrast,
musical settings of non-traditional
and contemporary texts are more difficult to come by. With the
proposal of a Composer Commissioning Program at WBUUC, we hope to make
a small
dent in
this contrast. The music committee’s vision is to gather various texts
(Unitarian, Humanist, Buddhist, Islamic, Jewish, Christian, Taoist, Hindu,
etc.) that lend themselves to music and then vote and select a text to be
set to music. A local composer would then be commissioned to write a work
using this text with a premiere performance upon completion.
